Q&A

How does Tattoo Removal work?

The Q Switched laser available on our multiplatform Spectrum laser device has been determined as a gold standard for tattoo removal. It works by producing extremely short pulses of high energy light and is able to penetrate down to the dermis and shatter tattoo ink without causing damage to the surrounding skin tissue. The tattoo pigment then heats up and starts to break down into small particles that then disappear over a period of time and treatments.

How long does a treatment take?

Depending on the size of the treated area(s), after numbing, treatments can take anywhere from several minutes up to an hour. The number of sessions needed to remove a tattoo depends on a few factors: the age of the tattoo, the color of the ink, the location of the tattoo, and the density of the ink.

  • Age: Older tattoos can be removed with fewer treatments than newer tattoos. A black ink tattoo that is 10 years old may take one or two treatments fewer than a 1 year old black tattoo.
  • Color: Certain colors are more easily removed than others. Black and red tattoos are the easiest to remove. Orange, yellow, pink, and other shades are slightly more difficult to remove. The more difficult colors to remove are light green, light blue, and teal/turquoise.
  • Location: Because tattoo removal depends on the body to flush away the shattered ink particles, areas of the body with less circulation often take more time to show results. The toes, fingers, ears, and nose are areas that may show slower results.
  • Ink Density: Shading in a tattoo is easily removed. Basically, the less dense the tattoo, the quicker the ink will shatter and disappear from the skin.

When will I see results? How long do they last?

Tattoo removal sessions are spaced six to eight weeks apart, which allows your skin to process the treatment. Many people start to see their ink fade slightly after each subsequent session and greater improvement after three appointments. Given six to eight weeks between each session, you can expect the results to start showing a few months after the process starts.

Is there downtime with Tattoo Removal?

On completion of a tattoo removal treatment, patients may experience minor discomfort and redness that will subside 24-48 hours.

How must does a Tattoo Removal cost?

Pricing and treatment plans will vary depending on the size and color of the ink being removed. Your laser provider will go over a treatment plan that includes pricing.
