How Does IPL Photofacial Work?

An intense pulsed light (IPL) photofacial is an aesthetic service that simply stimulates your body’s ability to heal itself and regenerate new cells and tissues. This rejuvenating treatment works by exposing your skin to beams of very strong light. Different wavelengths of light treat varying conditions by reaching specific depths of the skin. Over time, new collagen, elastin fibers, and skin tissues begin developing and replacing older, damaged layers of skin, and soon all of those imperfections you have will flake off and fade away naturally.

Who Is A Good Candidate For IPL Treatments?

Your IPL photofacial service from Natural Body Spa + Med Spa is entirely tailored to you and the area of your body you want to treat. An IPL photofacial is beneficial for minimizing the appearance of:

  • Freckles
  • Age spots
  • Pigmentation
  • Sun damage
  • Redness/Rosacea
  • Uneven skin tone
  • Brown or dark spots
  • Vascular lesions, such as facial veins or broken capillaries

An IPL photofacial isn’t just for your face. The certified laser providers at Natural Body Spa + Med Spa can also treat your neck, décolleté, shoulders, and other areas of the body.

IPL FAQs

How Many IPL Photofacial Sessions Will I Need?

The number of recommended IPL Photofacial sessions depends on your skin’s pigmentation, sun damage, and desired results. For optimal outcomes — especially for extensive pigmentation or sun damage — your Natural Body Spa + Med Spa laser provider may recommend a package of 3 to 5 IPL photofacial sessions, each spaced at least 1 month apart.

Is There Any Downtime After An IPL Treatment?

Yes. You may experience some redness, swelling, and tenderness that peak within the first 48 hours, then gradually start to subside within about a week as your skin heals.

Though the pigmented lesions may initially look raised and/or darker with a reddened perimeter, they will gradually turn darker over the next 24-48 hours — this is normal. It may turn dark brown or even black and will begin to flake off in 7-10 days.

It is important to not pick, scratch or remove any scabs and refrain from using any exfoliants until the treatment area is healed. Visibly dramatic results are clear about four to eight weeks after your IPL photofacial at Natural Body Spa + Med Spa.

Pre- and Post-Treatment Instructions

Pre-Treatment Care Instructions

For optimal results, it’s important to follow pre-treatment directions.

  • Avoid direct exposure to the sun and tanning beds 4 weeks prior to your treatment session.
  • Discontinue the use of exfoliating creams 1 week prior to the entire treatment.
  • Use a gentle cleanser and do not apply any make up or skincare products day of treatment.
  • Consider bringing a hat or another accessory for sun protection.
  • If you have a history of herpes outbreaks in the areas being treated, a prescribed medication from your physician is recommended for 1 week prior to the treatment prior to help prevent an outbreak.

Post-Treatment Instructions

For optimal results, it’s important to follow post-treatment instructions.

  • Post-care treatments products will be recommended to help aid in the healing process of your skin. Our favorite post-care products are a gentle cleanser, Lytera 2.0. Dermal Repair Cream, and Total Defense SPF products from SkinMedica.
  • Until the redness has completely resolved, avoid all of the following:
    • Applying cosmetics to the treated area.
    • Swimming, especially in pools with chemicals, such as chlorine.
    • Ocean swimming and Hot Tubs/Jacuzzis.
    • Excessive perspiration or irritation to the treated area.
    • Sun exposure to the treated areas – to prevent skin color change.
